Our Story & Philosphy
As college students, we constantly faced the frustrating challenge of converting & modifying PDF files for homeworks, projects, and other files with sensitive information such as names, financial information and more. We quickly realized that existing PDF-WebApps just didn't cut it. They all demanded sign-ups, subscriptions for basic functions, were painfully slow, had clunky user interfaces, and, worst of all, compromised our privacy by allowing them access to our sensitive documents. The idea of sacrificing our privacy to corporate entities just to convert a file was unacceptable.
This frustration fueled the creation of LuxPDF: an Open-Source, Privacy-Focused Alternative to popular PDF WebApps. While others forced you to register, pay subscriptions, store your data in the cloud, and offer subpar user experiences, we've laser-focused on two core principles: Privacy and User Experience. So we got to work, developing a service that's not only incredibly lightweight and efficient but also completely free and privacy-focused. At LuxPDF, we never collect any data on the files you upload or modify. Your documents stay on your device, just as they should. A crazy concept other services can't grasp.
You might be wondering: "Why is LuxPDF free and unlimited? Why no registrations? How do you cover server costs? What is your incentive?" We believe in complete transparency about our philosophy and how we operate. LuxPDF is, and always will be, completely free, with no registration needed, and truly unlimited. Because we crafted LuxPDF to have all file conversions and modifications performed directly on your computer, client-side, your files never leave your device and we never touch, view, or store them. This client-side processing also has significant benefits for you: it allows us to maintain a lightweight, fast, and efficient codebase, offering a service that's faster, cheaper, and more secure than our competitors. We strongly believe that there is no other service out there that is as privacy-focused as LuxPDF while being completely free to use, unrestricted, with no registration needed.
Our plan for affording server and hosting costs is straightforward: sponsorships, and voluntary donations. No trackers & data harvesting ads. No, there are no limitations. You can use our tools as much as you want, with any file size that your browser can handle. We don't believe in restricting access to essential features. Note that although there no limitations to file size or usage, the performance of LuxPDF largely depends on your device's hardware. Depending on the operation, you can generally expect 1000 page PDFs to be modified almost instantaneously.
Open-sourcing LuxPDF is our way of ensuring transparency and trust. We want to build a small community of problem solvers, solving the problem to why PDF WebApps suck, in 2025. Our ultimate goal for LuxPDF is to just be the best PDF WebApp, and we can't do this alone.
